Scents of Summer

Posted on July 09, 2014 by Tijon Fragrance Lab

Scents that Summer Loves

Everyone knows summer is a time for bikinis, flip-flops, and summer dresses. However, there is one crucial summer-must that many people forget: that perfect summer scent. As literary author C. Joybell C. so wisely stated, “you are never fully dressed without perfume.” So, throw on your bikinis and flip-flops but don’t forget that crucial final step in finding that perfect summer scent (and no, I am not talking about the smell of sunscreen, chlorine, and ocean!).  The best summer scents are fresh and natural, giving you many options. There is the classic citrus or fruity scent, which are my personal favorites. Or, you can go in another direction and choose a woody scent (remember: woody doesn’t mean masculine, it just carries a no-nonsense femininity). If you are a floral-lover, light florals are also welcomed, just make sure they are not too heavy.

Scents to Pack Away with Your Winter Coats

Just as you wouldn’t wear a parka in the dead of summer, there are certain scents that should be avoided as summer ramps up. Heat increases the impact of odor meaning you want to avoid notes that could become headache inducing when intensified by the heat. These headache inducing notes include: cloying orientals, heavy floral blends, patchouli, and vanilla. A good rule of thumb is stay away from anything super sweet, syrupy, or sugary. So pack away your Euphoria by Calvin Klein with your winter clothes and take out your Daisy Sunshine by Marc Jacobs (you can never really go wrong with a Marc Jacob’s Perfume)!

Make Your Scent last in the Heat of Summer

As I mentioned, heat intensifies odor; it also makes wearing perfume a fleeting experience. The increased body heat causes the alcohol in the perfume to evaporate more quickly, which means you need to remember to reapply. Be mindful of reapplication, as you never want your perfume to enter the room before you do. A helpful hint in making your perfume last is: layer, layer, layer! Putting on a layer of lotion or sunscreen before you apply your perfume moistens your skin, making the scent last longer (make sure the lotion/sunscreen is unscented).

Noteworthy Summer Scents

  • Laugh Often Avon by Reese Witherspoon
  • Burberry Summer Perfume by Burberry
  • Hermés Un Jardin sur le Toit
  • Cranberry Splash by Marc Jacobs
  • One Summer by Calvin Klein
  • La Jolla by Tijon

Which San Diego Beach Are You?

Posted on February 02, 2014 by Tijon Employee

Among the things San Diego is most famous for (Mexican food, Sea World, Balboa Park, Ron Burgundy), our beautiful beaches definitely top the list. Whether you're a seasoned surfer looking to catch the gnarliest waves, or a photographer searching for that perfect sunset, the sun, sand, and sea is bountiful in our coastal paradise! So whether you're a born-and-bred or a shivering East Coaster dreaming of warmer climates, sink your toes into this list of five San Diego beaches for every activity and personality.

    source: UT San Diego

    1. Most Famous... Coronado Beach

The beach in Coronado, or "Crown Town" as the locals call it, is the site of the legendary Hotel Del Coronado, where Old Hollywood staycationed and Marilyn Monroe filmed Some Like it Hot. It is also listed as a National Historic Landmark and the "#1 Beach in the United States" as chosen by Dr. Stephen Leatherman, Director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research. It's the place to see and be seen. At Tijon, our Coronado perfume is a sweet summer scent that combines tropical fruits like coconut and papaya with hints of chamomile and clove for a scent as dazzling as the crown of the city.

    2. Most Private and Secluded... Solana Beach

Because of its dramatic bluffs and steep staircases, Solana beach can be a bit difficult to access. The trouble is worth it, though, just for the pristine conditions and breathtaking views (which makes for a lovely ride-by on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner train). The Seaside area is a surfer's dream with an outer reef that breaks on big swells, and Fletcher Park is a popular part for picnics and cave-dwelling. Tijon's own Solana fragrance is as unique as its namesake, with crisp notes of ocean rain and eucalyptus spearmint paired with delicate florals of rose and butterfly flower.

    3. Most Stereotypically-Southern-California... Mission Beach

It has a boardwalk and amusement park full of classic, 1920's-era rides like the Tilt-A-Whirl and the Giant Dipper rickety roller coaster. Oh, and there's also the Wave House, where wannabe surfers can learn how to shred on the Flowrider wave-simulation machine. It doesn't get any more SoCal than that.

    4. Most Hippie and Groovy... Ocean Beach

The motto around these parts is "Keep O.B. Weird," and it is spoken with pride. Arguably the most progressive and bohemian beach of San Diego. Ocean Beach is majorly dog-friendly and replete with co-ops, organic markets, antique stores, drum circles, smoke shops, and vintage VW vans.

    5. Best All-Around... La Jolla

La Jolla Shores is well-known for being one of the best San Diego spots for water sports like kayaking, scuba diving, and parasailing. It's also a great place to marvel at the marine life and go whale-watching or seal-searching. We might be biased being La Jolla business residents, but we think the Shores is one of the prettiest places in town. And our La Jolla scent is one of our most popular fragrances, with fresh citrus notes of bergamot, lime, mandarin, and grapefruit layered over sweet flowers and a sensual base of patchouli, amber, sandalwood, and musk.

    Coronado: The Crowned One

Posted on July 18, 2013 by Rachelle Crumrine

Coronado, translated in Spanish as the “crowned one”, flaunts historic monuments, a picturesque beach and harbor, and year-round activities for the tourist and local alike. Tijon Parfumerie recently announced Coronado as the winner of its countywide Signature Scent contest. Voted on an online poll, Coronado is the second fragrance in the Parfumerie’s custom San Diego line; La Jolla being the first.

Why did San Diego choose Coronado as the next signature scent? Well, with views of Downtown San Diego and a ferry that crosses the bay, anyone can rent a bike, segway or surrey and simply cruise down the boardwalk while stopping along outstanding waterfront restaurants. The other side of the island is home to one of the Nation’s most beautiful beaches with rich white sand and the historic Hotel Del Coronado. This famous landmark and hotel is a great place to dine, admire the antique decor, or just relax at the 4-star spa.

With three different scents to choose from, the public is invited to stop by Tijon (7853 Herschel Ave.) during the month of July to vote on the perfume they think should be “crowned” the signature scent of San Diego’s beautiful beach town.  There is also a drawing to win a free perfume creation experience!
